Shahrokh Shariat, Head of the University Clinic for Urology at the Medical University of Vienna, was awarded the prestigious Gold Cystoscope Award by the American Urological Association (AUA).

The jury of the award thus honoured Shariat’s contributions to urological oncology in the fields of epigenomics, oncological biomarkers and predictive nomograms. Shariat is the first non-American prizewinner.

“This is a special honor for me and shows how much the work of our team at the University Hospital of Urology of the Medical University of Vienna has gained international recognition,” said Shariat, pleased with the award. “It is nice to see that our contribution to urological oncology is so highly regarded worldwide.”

The award will be presented at the AUA’s annual meeting on 16 May 2017 in Boston (USA). The Gold Cystoscope Award has been presented by the American Urological Association (AUA) every year since 1977 to urologists who have made outstanding achievements in their specialty. Founded in 1902, the AUA is committed to setting the highest standards in education, research and health policy. The AUA has about 19,000 members. It publishes the “Journal of Urology”.

About Shahrokh Shariat
Shahrokh Shariat came to Vienna from Tehran (Iran) as a child, took his school-leaving examination here and studied chemistry and mathematics at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic University in Lausanne, but then moved to Vienna for medical studies at MedUni Vienna After completing his doctorate, Shariat went to the USA, completed a Research Fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and completed his urological specialist training at the University of Texas in Dallas. At the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Center in New York, Shariat specialized in urological oncology. From 2010 to 2013, he headed the bladder cancer center at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York. Since June 2013 he has been head of the University Clinic for Urology of MedUni Vienna at the AKH Vienna.

Shariat has authored a total of more than 900 peer-reviewed publications and holds four patents based on his research in the field of prostate and bladder cancer. His Scopus h index (deer factor) is 76, the Google h index: 100, and in 2012 he was voted the best urological oncologist in New York. In the USA he was twice named one of the country’s leading urologists.
He is the only one who has been awarded the two most important urologist prizes:
2014 EAU Crystal Matula Award and now the AUA Gold Cystoscope Award 2017.
