EAU Crystal Matula Award for Shahrokh Shariat

The European Association of Urology (EAU) has awarded Shahrokh Shariat with the EAU Crystal Matula Award. The prize was presented to the head of the University Clinic for Urology at MedUni Vienna during the European Urology Congress in Stockholm.

The EAU Crystal Matula Award has been presented to urologists under 40 years of age since 1996 and is considered the most prestigious award for the most promising European urologists. The European urological community is striving to push the boundaries of medical possibilities ever further. This prize honours special commitment and innovation in urological research and practice.

In addition, an abstract by Shariat and colleagues won third place in the category “Best Abstract by a resident”.

About Shahrokh Shariat
Shariat came to Vienna from Tehran (Iran) as a child, took his school-leaving examination here and studied chemistry and mathematics at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic University in Lausanne, but then moved to Vienna to study medicine at MedUni (mentor Michael Marberger). After his doctorate, Shariat went to the USA and completed his urological specialist training at the University of Texas in Dallas. At the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Center in New York, Shariat specialized in urological oncology.
From 2010 to 2013, he headed the bladder cancer center at Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York.
Since June 2013 he has been head of the University Clinic for Urology at MedUni Vienna.
Shariat has authored a total of around 695 publications and holds five patents based on his research in the field of prostate and bladder cancer. In 2012 he was voted the best urological oncologist in New York. In the USA he was twice named one of the country’s leading urologists. Shariat has won numerous awards for “Best Abstract”. His h-index (stag factor) is 58.
